Image of Italy in the chronicles of nineteenth-century Cuban travelers
Synopsis
Although in the XIX century chronicles of European travelers through Latin American lands, including Cuba, were frequent, there were few published by Cuban travelers about their stays in Europe. At different times Antonio Guiteras (1823-1893), Enrique Piñeyro (1839-1911) and Aurelia Castillo de González (1842-1920) visited Italy and in one way or another made their countrymen share in their assessments and judgments. Although the first and the last share an interest in Vesuvius and the Pompeian ruins, all three visit Venice of which they offer an image nuanced by their own concerns and national desires, as we present in this article.
