Synopsis

This essay addresses the issue of the admissibility of non-alcoholic beer from the point of view of new forms of Islamic authority expressing themselves through the web. The marketing of non-alcoholic beer has undergone a significant leap worldwide in recent years. This was possible thanks to new awareness and specific social and health policies. The consumption of non-alcoholic beer has considerable potential also in the MENA. While in European countries and North America it must challenge the imaginary that sees it as a surrogate product of the original alcoholic beverage, in Muslim countries the challenge is to succeed in imposing itself as a halal product. The legal responses (fatawa) regarding its admissibility according to Islamic law (shari‘a) are not uniform. This article examines some negative and positive responses, contextualizing them and analysing their argumentations.
