Synopsis

In this essay, the main characteristics and open questions concerning bronze coinage of the Ostrogothic period are resumed, updated and deepened. In particular, it returns to the weight aspects of the Aenean coinage as a fundamental element for the attribution, dating and classification between the 5th and 6th centuries and emphasises the fundamental need for the measurement of the weight of each specimen, with due consideration of the statistical answers that can be given, as shown by the author himself in studies carried out since 2001. On the basis of these elements, the definition of an Aenean nominal from Atalaric is again discussed, according to the author corresponding to a nominal of 15 nummi instead of a decanummion, as believed until recently by much of the literature.
