Synopsis

This study aims to reconstruct the reception of the cult of saint Peter martyr in medieval Sicily. I used three sources, different from each other in type and chronology: the Thirteenth-century legend written by the Friar Preacher Tommaso Agni da Lentini; the four Fifteenth-century sermons of the Sanctuary, contained in the Divinum Petri Hieremie Opus, composed by the Friar Preacher Peter Jeremiah; and finally the graffiti on the walls of the prisons of the Inquisition located at the Chiaramonte-Steri palace in Palermo. It can be concluded that the spread of the cult of the saint-martyr-inquisitor was with little enthusiasm, widespread and rooted among the Friars Preachers of the Fifteenth century, was promoted among the population, and then was transmitted until the Modern Age.
