Pietro martire delle Alpi e i suoi derivati
Synopsis
The figure of Saint Peter Martyr is highly popular, not only on its own but also through its influence on other saints, who adopt his hagiographic and iconographic traits. In this not extensively studied phenomenon, a significant role is played by homony- my and by the circumstances of martyrdom: the deaths of Brother Peter of Verona (1252), the first saint and martyr of the Order of the Friars Preachers, Peter of Ruffia (martyred in the cloister of the Friars Minor in Susa, 1365), and Antonio of Rivoli (who died among infidels in Tunis, 1460) are all attributed to ‘heretics.’ This compre- hensive analysis addresses the establishment of the Friars Preachers in the sub-Alpine region and examines the roles and functions of the Order’s representatives, particular- ly as inquisitors of ‘heretic pravity’.
