L'europeizzazione della memoria e il mantra del Mai Più
Synopsis
The article examines the progressive Europeanization of the memory of World War II and the Holocaust, initially built on a national basis and later unified by “cosmopolitan” narratives of American origin. Founded on the mantra “Never Again” and the equation of totalitarianisms, this strategy has favored the legitimization of liberal democracies, while limiting critical voices. The author shows how, although presented as inclusive, these memory policies fuel nationalist drives and justify “democratic” military interventions. Furthermore, it explains how right-wing Zionism has influenced the European agenda, leveraging a strategic use of the Holocaust to legitimize political projects. The article concludes that such rhetoric, rather than uniting, can consolidate partisan interests. It reveals the limits of a “universal” memory that generates tensions.
