Dall’occultamento dell'Holodomor ucraino (1932-1933) come avvenimento storico, al diniego della sua natura genocidaria

Synopsis

The great Holodomor famine in Ukraine (1932-1933), which caused some five million deaths, artificially generated by the Kremlin, which used it as a weapon to subdue Ukrainian peasants and the spirit of independence, has been a typical object of denial for decades, which has been manifested in fluctuating forms and intensity. Despite numerous simultaneous and direct reports, from the very beginning the denial utilized different "lines of defense" and "time steps": from the absolute rejection of the historical fact, to the discrediting of witnesses and scientific research, to the reduction to a "natural disaster" equated with other Soviet famines, to the denial of its genocidal character. The Holodomor denial raises crucial questions related to the genocides and democides of the twentieth century. Above all, it primed a specular struggle for recognition that is still intertwined today, influencing its conflicting dynamics, with contemporary international relations.
