Synopsis

This is a time of profound transformation for the monetary and payments system. Technological innovation and, above all, DLTs are challenging the traditional duopoly between central bankers and commercial banks, allowing the entry of new players, such as startups and digital giants. Consequently, faced with such an expansion of the supply of digital payment instruments by private entities, the debate about whether the ECB and other central bankers should begin issuing their own central bank digital currency is grafted onto. This is certainly a complex issue from a technical point of view, but it does not diminish the importance of having, in the future, a public payment instrument suited to a transactional world that is increasingly moving towards digital.
