Synopsis

How does the animated figure contribute to contemporary dramatic writing, and conversely, what does it derive from it? This research adopts a comparative perspective to examine the dramaturgical production for contemporary puppet theatre in Italy and France – two countries where, since the late 20th century, this artistic field has undergone significant aesthetic and dramaturgical transformations. The growing attention to dramaturgical concerns has reinforced the relationship between puppetry and theatre as a whole. Through this process of osmosis, key characteristics of contemporary playwriting have become integral to puppet theatre productions since the 1980s. The objective of this study is to demonstrate how animated figures open new creative pathways for contemporary dramaturgy by expanding the spectrum of representation.
