Synopsis

The figure of Giovanni Testori (1923-1993), a hundred years after his birth and thirty years after his death, seems to be experiencing a “second youth.” Today, Testori is one of the most vibrant literary authors. This is due in part to the variety of literary genres in which he expressed his vehement artistic drive: among those who study him are art historians, scholars of fiction and poetry, linguists, theater critics, as well as directors and actors. But what keeps Testori’s presence alive above all is the quality of his work and the sense of wonder that so many of his texts continue to inspire in those who encounter them for the first time or have remained faithful to them for years. Innocent and visceral, Testori pushed far along the path marked out by the modern diktat of originality, understood not only as a stylistic a priori, but as a genuine existential urgency. What is explored here are the many forms of Testori’s expressive quest: not merely aesthetic, but grounded in the desire to forge an expressive instrument capable of transferring the tormented interiority of the self onto the page, ultimately reaching the paradoxical attempt to transcend the word as a linguistic sign, in order to arrive at a language understood as gesture, as body.
