Synopsis

The purpose of this study is to explore the issue of energy efficiency within Italian Higher education Institutions (HEIs). Its primary objective is to identify the levels of energy consumption and their associated costs, as well as to highlight policies and strategies aimed at their improvement. The study draws upon data collected in 2022 on behalf of the Ministry of University and Research (MUR), and it encompasses a general evaluation of Italian organizations and an in-depth study of six pilot cases. The objective of this paper is to emphasize the significance of universities adopting collective behaviors and sharing practices with the aim of improving energy efficiency, with the goal of reducing both costs and emissions.

Author Biographies

Chiara Alberti, Università degli Studi di Bergamo

is a management engineer and PhD student enrolled in the Technology, Innovation, and Management program at the University of Bergamo. She has received a doctoral grant from PNNR funds to conduct research on the topic of Higher Education and Sustainability. Her research aims to explore the intersection between these two fields, investigating the relationship and the consequences on both students and the territory. In addition, she serves as a tutor for courses of Public Management and Economics and Business organization.

Michele Meoli, Università degli Studi di Bergamo

is Associate Professor at the Department of Management, Information and Production Engineering, University of Bergamo, where he teaches Finance and Business Organization. He is the Deputy Director of the program in Management Engineering, and Director of the CISAlpino Institute for Comparative Studies in Europe (CCSE), University of Bergamo and University of Augsburg, where he coordinates the Research Group on Higher Education. He was Marie Curie Research Fellow at the Centre for Econometrics Analysis, Cass Business School (City University, London). He is an advisor of the Italian Ministry of University and Research on Higher Education and Right to Education. He is member of the Editorial Board of European Journal of Higher Education and of the Editorial Review Board of Small Business Economics. His research interests include Corporate Governance, Corporate Finance, Academic entrepreneurship, Higher Education and Science Policy.

Stefano Paleari, Università degli Studi di Bergamo

is Full Professor of Corporate Finance and Public Management at the University of Bergamo, and the Advisor of the Ministry of Higher Education for the implementation of the National Plan for Recovery and Resilience. He was the Rector of the University of Bergamo, from 2009 to 2015; Secretary General of the CRUI (the Italian Council of the Rectors of Italian Universities), from April 2011 to September 2013; President of the CRUI (the Italian Council of the Rectors of Italian Universities) from September 2013 to September 2015; Board Member of the EUA (European University Association) from April 2013 to April 2017; and Member of the Coordinating Council for Higher Education of Portugal, from 2016 to 2019. In addition, he is currently Member of the Steering Committee of the Istituto Toniolo, founder and promoter of the Sacred Heart University of Milan.
