Synopsis

The volume deals with the reconnaissance of the Atlantic islands facing the kingdom of Mauretania according to Pliny the Elder, who based his account on the testimony of Juba II, a friend and ally king of Augustus from 25 BC to 23-24 AD. After Juba’s profile, the volume investigates the expedition he organised to the Fortunatae Insulae (now the Canary Islands) on behalf of the princeps, reconstructing the political reasons, such as knowledge of the western borders of the empire, and economic ones, such as the exploitation of resources. The historical investigation is accompanied by a geographical and nautical reconstruction of the expedition, which the king described in his Λιβυκά. The volume examines both Juba's contribution to knowledge of Africa and his sources, including the Periplus of Hanno and the Punic books of the library of Carthage.
