Synopsis

Health is a Constitutional right. So, why is talking about private consumption in healthcare relevant? Does thinking there could be room for further private initiative make sense in a quasi-market? If so, given the issue of constitutionally guaranteed rights, what scope is there and for what needs?

These are the questions explored and to which this textbook seeks answers by filling a gap in the management and health policy literature. Rigorously analyzing the trend of private health consumption in the Italian health sector, the implications for the NHS, and proposing conceptual and operational frameworks for those interested in developing entrepreneurial activity in healthcare or consolidating their management skills in the field.

Author Biographies

Federico Lega, University of Milan

Ph.D., is full professor of Health Economics, Policy, and Management at the University of Milan, where he coordinates the Center for Research and Higher Education in Health Administration (HEAD). Board member of the European Healthcare Management Association (EHMA), Editor-in-Chief of SAGE journal of Health Services Management Research, advisor to the World Healthcare Organization, and adjunct professor at UAB (USA) and GMU (UAE). He directed the International Master in Healthcare Management and Policy (MIHMEP) at SDA Bocconi. He also contributed  founding the Master in Healthcare Management (MiMS) that he directed for nine years,as well as the executive training segment for the healthcare sector. He carries out managerial training, research, and consultancy activities for institutions, healthcare companies, biomedical and pharmaceutical companies, and the entire health sector, on topics of strategy, governance, organizational development, change management, people and performance management, operational management. He has credits for more than ten books and over one hundred scientific publications.

Cristian Ferraris, Assolombarda

Director of organisation, development, marketing and life science of Assolombarda, General Director of AIOP Lombardia and General Director of the Sanità Futura Foundation. Contract professor at the “Vita e Salute” San Raffaele University and at the University of Milan, member of the Board of Directors of FASI. He coordinates the activities of the Life sciences supply chain for Assolombarda and Confindustria Lombardia and is coordinator of the Working Group on staff shortages of the European Union of Private Hospitals. He carries out representation and consultancy activities for the healthcare sector and coordinates the international development activities of the private social and healthcare system of Lombardy.
