Le lingue del mercato e il mercato delle lingue: un’analisi del paesaggio linguistico fiorentino
Keywords:
Linguistic landscape, Urban sociolinguistics, Touristification, MigrationsSynopsis
The languages that populate public spaces do more than simply reflect changes in the city; they actively contribute to bringing them about. Through a study of the San Lorenzo market in Florence, this volume explores the linguistic landscape as a vantage point for observing contemporary urban transformations linked to migration, touristification, and gentrification. These processes, in fact, redefine the distribution and value of languages, affecting the balance of the local language market and bringing to the fore—alongside Italian, English, and Asian languages such as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, as well as other European languages—whose presence bears witness to the tourist flows and the diversity of communities that traverse, inhabit, and bring the market to life. In this context, particular attention is devoted to the role of English as a global resource and to the re-semantization of dialect, which, from a code traditionally associated with less prestigious social domains, is progressively imbued with values of authenticity, tradition, and quality, eventually transforming into a commercial resource of high symbolic value. The linguistic landscape thus emerges as a dynamic space in which social, economic, and cultural processes continually intertwine and are negotiated, contributing to the redefinition of identity and the experience of urban space.
