Synopsis

The Newtonian Mechanics is one of the first teachings that an undergraduate student meets in a scientific bachelor. It is therefore important to approach it deeply and thoroughly, but also to learn how to recognise it in all its manifestations, in the world around us.
For this reason, all treated topics come with several examples, taken from daily experience, or from astronomy or particle physics. A wide discussion is devoted to the apparent forces, to the dynamics of rigid bodies, and to the universal gravitation – one of the most fascinating achievements of such a discipline.
An introduction to Special Relativity completes this book.
Some chapters in the book are aimed at introducing to specific mathematical tools.
The book is complemented by about 200 figures.

Author Biography

Marcello Fanti

Marcello Fanti is an experimental physicist, and his research field is the physics of elementary particles.
He studied at the University of Bologna, where he also got his PhD degree, working in the OPAL collaboration - one of the four experiments at the LEP collider at CERN. Then, he moved to Milano, where he continued his career working in the ATLAS experiment at the LHC collider. He had the chance to contribute (together with many other people!) to the huge work that brought to the discovery of the Higgs boson (July 2012).
Presently, he is associate professor at the Physics Department of the University of Milano.
