Synopsis

The book investigates the medieval cold case of the murder of the inquisitor Peter ofVerona (1252), who quickly became saint Peter martyr (1253) and the first inquisitor-saintof the Roman Catholic Church. Beyond historiographical myths, the essays show thedevelopments – sometimes paradoxical – of a death that was an important step toconsolidate the medieval
officium fidei
.
The multidisciplinary approach demonstrates the rich possibility of analyses of the pastthrough what survived: papal letters, fragments of inquisitorial trials, painted and sculptedimages, account books, notarial documentation, liturgical texts, sermons, objects –weapons of the crime and coins – and bone remains, namely the skull, of whom wasimmediately considered a "martyr of the faith" whose cult, however, had some difficultiesto be established.
