Synopsis

This volume is part of a project between the University of Milan and the City of Milan, entitled "The Days of Democracy. Eighty Years of the Italian Republic", celebrating the anniversary of the referendum of June 2, 1946. On that day, Italian women were called to vote for the first time, actively participating in the choice between Monarchy and Republic and in the election of the Constituent Assembly. It is a selection of previously unpublished images, collected from Milanese archives and libraries and accompanied by historical texts, on the referendum that marked the beginning of republican democracy and ended the cycle of fascism and the Savoy monarchy. The volume reflects on the connection between memory and citizenship, between the Constitution and participation, highlighting the contributions of the protagonists of the time and engaging current generations in an active discussion of the founding values of our democratic coexistence.
