Synopsis

This volume aims to be a democratic and revolutionary tool, aimed at those who think it is important to practice medicine in a critical way and that the only teachers are the patients.

This light but rigorous publication provides an introduction to the critical evaluation of scientific literature useful in everyday clinical practice. Starting with the clinical question, all aspects useful in clinical decision-making are addressed: the literature search, the interpretation and application of study results to the individual patient, the basic elements of cognitive decision-making. Each topic starts with a real-life clinical case in order to facilitate understanding and practical relevance of the topics covered. A glossary, an appendix for more technical topics and an extensive bibliography complete the volume. In the end, we think it will be interesting even for the most reactionary (or skeptical about “scientific evidence”) physicians, also because ... it is Open Access!

Author Biographies

Giorgio Costantino , University of the Studies of Milan

is associate professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Milan and chief of Emergency Medicine of the IRCCS Fondazione Ca’ Granda, Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico in Milan.

His main fields of interest are assessing risk stratification in cardiovascular diseases together with critical appraisal of the literature and decision making. He coordinates the methodological school of the Italian Society of Internal Medicine (SIMI) and participated as teacher in numerous residential course of methodology. He is the deputy Editor of Internal and Emergency Medicine and has authored or co-authored more than 100 publications on international peer reviewed journals. He is the coordinator of the residency in Emergency Medicine of the University of Milan.

 

Giovanni Casazza, University of the Studies of Milan

is Full Professor of Medical Statistics at the University of Milan. His main research interests are in the field of clinical epidemiology and Evidence Based medicine (EBM). In particular, he is involved in studies on the evaluation of prognostic factors, on the assessment of diagnostic tests accuracy and systematic reviews. He is a member of the Cochrane Hepato-Biliary Group He has organized and participated in numerous workshops and residential courses on methodology and clinical epidemiology. He is author of more than 200 publications in indexed journals.
