Synopsis

The volume brings together 34 essays ranging from wide-ranging research to topical scientific studies to honour Lucia Travaini, a scholar with an original and multifaceted profile who enjoys international renown in the fields of Numismatics and Monetary History. The studies, divided into seven thematic sections, address issues of classification and chronology, production and counterfeiting, iconography, monetary circulation, ‘non-economic’ uses of coins, money and written sources, collecting and antiquarian studies, from antiquity to the present day. The volume, inspired by Travaini’s research interests, will serves as a valuable tool for updating and guiding academic research on key topics of investigation and debate in the relevant fields.

Author Biographies

Monica Baldassarri, University of Milan, Italy

Monica Baldassarri is Assistant professor in Numismatics at the University of Milan, where she teaches History of Medieval and Modern Coins. After completing advanced studies at the University of Oxford and the Ashmolean Museum, she earned a PhD in Medieval History from the University of Cagliari and a Postgraduate Diploma in Late Antique and Medieval Archaeology from the University of Pisa. She has held research fellowships at the University of Pisa and the CNR of Pisa in the fields of history, archaeology and numismatics. For years, she has been engaging in the study of monetary history from Late Antiquity to the Modern Age, with particular emphasis on archaeo-numismatics, monetary iconography and the various uses of coins. Her findings have been widely published (20 volumes and 250 essays). She is currently collaborating on international projects with the British Museum as curator of the volumes The Italian Coins in the British Museum.

 

Barrie Cook, The British Museum

Barrie Cook is Senior Curator responsible for Medieval and Modern Collections in the Department of Money and Medals at the British Museum. He has curated 15 numismatic exhibitions at the British Museum and contributed to many other major exhibitions and galleries. In 2023 he was awarded the British Numismatic Society’s Sanford Saltus Medal for scholarly contributions to British numismatics.

He has published widely in medieval and early modern numismatics. Until recently his role included responsibility for new English coin hoards in his area of specialism. The first of two volumes publishing the results of this role, English medieval coin hoards: the age of the sterling penny, 1280-1351, will appear in 2024. He is also co-editor and curator of the series The Italian Coins in the British Museum and has been coordinating and collaborating on international projects with the University of Milan.

Stefano Locatelli, University of Parma

Stefano Locatelli is an Assistant professor of Economic History at the University of Parma, specialising in the monetary history of Europe and the Mediterranean from the Middle Ages to the Early modern period. Having trained as an archivist at the State Archives of Milan, he completed a PhD in Economic and Social History at the University of Manchester. He has received postdoctoral fellowships from the Italian Institute for Historical Studies, the UK Economic and Social Research Council, the Italian Academy at Columbia University, and the Leverhulme Trust. He is curator of the series The Italian Coins in the British Museum and has been coordinating and collaborating on international projects with the British Museum and Princeton University for many years.
