Synopsis

This volume constitutes the first publication of the Centre for visuaL hIstOry (CLIO), set up in 2023 at the Department of Historical Studies of the University of Milan in the context of the project ‘IMAGINeS: Images and History’, financed by the MUR’s Departments of Excellence programme for the period 2023-2027. The essays collected here represent a significant contribution to the advancement of studies on visual culture from a historical perspective, in constant dialogue with the most innovative methodological and theoretical instances.

Author Biographies

Massimo Baioni, Università degli Studi di Milano

Massimo Baioni teaches Contemporary History at the State University of Milan. He has been visiting professor at the École Pratique des Hautes Études, at the Université Paris 8 and at the University of Italian Switzerland. His studies focus mainly on the politcs of memory and the public use of history. He is member of the editorial board of the review "Memoria e Ricerca" (Il Mulino) and co-director of the series Le ragioni di Clio (Pacini)

Giulia Giannini, Università degli Studi di Milano

Giulia Giannini est professeure d'histoire des sciences et des techniques à l’Université de Milan. Elle a travaillé au Centre Alexandre Koyré à Paris, au département SYRTE (Systèmes de Référence Temps Espace) de l'Observatoire de Paris, ainsi qu'à l'Institut Max Planck pour l'histoire des sciences à Berlin où elle a été boursière Humboldt. Elle est la chercheuse principale du projet de recherche ERC Consolidator TACITROOTS - The Accademia del Cimento in Florence : tracing the roots of the European scientific enterprise. Ses recherches portent sur l'histoire des institutions scientifiques et de l'expérimentation, les études culturelles, politiques et sociales de la science en Europe à l'époque moderne, ainsi que la culture visuelle, matérielle et imprimée dans l'histoire de la science.

Marta Luigina Mangini, Università degli Studi di Milano

Marta Luigina Mangini is Associate Professor in Latin Palaeography at the Department of Historical Studies of the University of Milan, where she currently teaches the History of Manuscript Books, as well as courses on textual criticism and editing medieval records. She serves as a member of the Scientific Board of the Masters in Digital Humanities at the University of Milan and she coordinates the Summer School INtegrating TRAditional and Digital Approaches in Manuscript Studies. Her research interests lie in the study of notarial documentation, including in the form of palimpsests and reused fragments.

Irene PiazPiazzonizoni, Università degli Studi di Milano

Irene Piazzoni teaches Contemporary History at the University of Milan. She deals with cultural and political history between the 19th and 20th centuries. In particular, she has devoted essays and monographs to the history of publishing, journalism and photojournalism, the history of theatre and entertainment system, the history of television, cultural policies and profiles of intellectuals, including Valentino Bompiani. Un editore italiano tra fascismo e dopoguerra (Led Edizioni, 2007), Storia delle televisioni in Italia. Dagli esordi alle web tv (Carocci, 2014), and Il Novecento dei libri.
