Synopsis

From the New World to contemporary weirdness, from American exoticism to the foreignness of migrants, this volume explores the paths of strangeness in Latin America. It does so through literature and other arts, intertwining politics and poetry, and constantly moving between the center and the margins of the canon and the continent. Without attempting to exhaust them, it highlights the incredible richness of these itineraries through a multiplicity of critical approaches. Although this work is only a guide, we are confident that it has awakened the desire for new explorations and further studies on the vast and still mysterious territories of the strange.

Author Biographies

Anna Boccuti, Università di Torino

PhD in American Studies, is an associate professor of Latin American Language and Literatures at the University of Turin. She has focused in particular on the discourse of the tango-canción, exploring its reverberations in other genres and media; on contemporary Spanish-American microfiction (she selected, introduced, and translated the anthology Bagliori estremi, 2012); on humor in 20th–21st-century Argentine literature (see the monograph Variazioni umoristiche. Julio Cortázar y César Bruto, 2018); and on contemporary fantastic literature. In general, she is interested in forms of representation that subvert languages and reshape imaginaries. On these topics, she has published numerous articles and coordinated several dossiers in academic journals (Artifara, Brumal, Pasavento, Revista de Crítica Literaria Latinoamericana), as well as giving lectures and seminars in Italian, European, and Latin American universities. Since 2017, she has been a member of the Grupo de Estudio de lo Fantástico coordinated by Prof. David Roas (Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona), and she has collaborated with various European and Latin American institutions, with which she has organized numerous congress activities and carried out several internationally oriented research projects. Currently, as co-PI of the PRIN-PNRR project “Plotting for Democracy: Literatures of Transition in Latin America,” funded by the EU, she is working on Latin American women writers and on the intersection between gender and monstrous figurations in contemporary narrative, with attention to feminist genealogies and Latin American feminist theories.
